Lockdown 2 homework. Week 4: The Future

The last of the homeworks, had a theme of the future. Now coming up with ideas, isn’t a problem for me but coming up with practical ideas, is often more of a challenge.

I am a huge science fiction fan and would ideally loved to have created a world like Blade Runner with all sorts of things happening in the image but with lockdown and an inability to go out, it wasn’t really practical to do something like that.

So I thought of something much more simple and what more simple a thing than me reading a book on science fiction.

Now choosing the book was a big thing, originally, I was going to choose, something from the Expanse series or from Ian M Banks Culture books but I wanted the book to have more meaning, which was why I went with Arther C Clarks, 2001 A Space Odyssey.

The book, is about the future and much of what is in the book is still in our future but it is set almost 20 years ago.

Shooting the image was relatively simple, I just used a simple 1 light set up, with my holding the book out with the pages placed in the centre. I had to pay attention to how my fingers were place, so they didn’t look like giant lumps of meat in the image.

Post production proved to be the biggest challenge to this image. I knew that I wanted to continue with the black and white. I lowered the brightness on the hands to they didn’t look over exposed and removed the bar code on the book, which was distracting and took a bit of time.

With lockdown, the image is passable, it isn’t the best image ever but I wasn’t hugely motivated and I just wanted to get it done. The image fills the brief but wasn’t that exciting.

If I was going to give it a score, it would probably be a good 5 out of 10.
