A portrait of blackness: A new photography project.

It is said that Photography is all about lighting. Photographing people is all about getting the light right and it can be very challenging, a light in slightly the wrong place can destroy an image, whilst the correct use of light can turn a good image into a great image.

One of the biggest challenges for photographers is photographing black skin because it doesn’t reflect light in the same way was lighter skin. So a photographer has to compensate but also has to be exceptionally careful, to get the light just right.

In 2021, I won best male portrait, in the Master Photographers Association London and Essex Awards, photographing the above image. Below, you can see a couple more images, which I have shot since then.

As a photographer, I am always striving to do better, to create better image and to make clients happy. I am currently, doing my Master Photographers Association awards and have been looking for a subject to use to gain this qualification and I have chosen to shoot black people.

No, up front I have to say that this is a professional qualification and one of the rules is that I have to charge for the images.

So, currently I am looking for 20-25 people to take part. The charge is £75 and for that you will receive 2 jpg images. Each image comes in 2 sizes, Full size and 2048 pixel, which is the maximum size sites like Facebook will have an image.

Prints and framed prints can be bought separately and are done through one of the UK top printing companies Print Foundry.

Each image will be individual and will discuss with the client what they want and create a bespoke image that will stand out.

Currently, I am looking for black people of all ages and sex.

This offer will only be available during the project and the price is substantially lower than I would normally offer a portrait for.
